Pencil Games: 12 You Can Play With One Pen
Twelve games needing one pen and one sheet: grid games, word games and drawing games, with the player count for each.
Türkçe okuShort answer
Pencil games split into three types: grid games (dots and boxes, battleship), word games (hangman, categories) and drawing games (drawing relay, folded drawings). Which type you want depends entirely on how many people are playing — grid games are for two, word games for four to six, drawing games for a crowd. This guide covers the rules, length and player count for 12 of them. Short answer: two people means a grid, a crowd means drawing.
Three kinds of pencil game
Every game playable with one pen and one sheet falls into one of three types, and which type you want is decided by how many people are present.
Grid games break past two players — waiting exceeds the length of a turn. Drawing games are the opposite: dull with two people, better the more you have.
| Type | Players | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| Grid games | 2 | Dots and boxes, battleship, SOS |
| Word games | 2-6 | Hangman, categories, anagrams |
| Drawing games | 4-12 | Drawing relay, folded drawings, shared picture |
Grid games
A grid goes on the paper and the whole game happens on it. All are two-player.
What all five share: squared paper makes setup dramatically faster. On blank paper, drawing the grid can take half as long as the game.
- 01Dots and boxes: draw a grid of dots, take turns adding lines, and whoever completes a box claims it and draws again. 3-5 minutes.
- 02Battleship: two 10x10 grids each, five ships, calling coordinates in turn. 10-15 minutes.
- 03SOS: write S or O into an empty grid in turn; completing the sequence scores and earns another go. 3-5 minutes.
- 04Noughts and crosses: 3x3 grid, three in a row wins. Always a draw between two adults, so it is filler.
- 05Parallel sudoku: print the same puzzle twice and race. Needs preparation.
Word games
These need writing, so children who cannot yet read are excluded.
Categories is the only simultaneous game in this group: because everyone writes at once, there is no waiting up to about six players.
- 01Hangman: one person picks a word and draws dashes, the other guesses letters, and each miss adds a body part. 5-10 minutes.
- 02Categories: divide the paper into columns, call a letter, and everyone writes at once. 5-8 minutes.
- 03Anagrams: build new words from the letters of one long word; matching answers cancel out. 5 minutes.
- 04Word chain: each word starts with the last letter of the previous one, repeats are out. 5 minutes.
Drawing games
None require drawing ability — bad drawing makes them better.
Folded drawings is the best pencil game for a crowded table: nobody waits, because everyone draws on a different sheet simultaneously and the sheets rotate.
- 01Drawing relay: one person draws while their team guesses. No speaking, no letters. 20 minutes.
- 02Folded drawings: the first person draws a head, folds the paper, the next draws a body. Unfold at the end. 10 minutes.
- 03Shared picture: everyone adds something to the same drawing in turn without saying what. 15 minutes.
Choosing by group size
Past eight players, drawing games are the only option left. Word and grid games all produce queues at that size.
| People | Best fit |
|---|---|
| 2 | Dots and boxes, battleship, hangman |
| 3-4 | Categories, anagrams, SOS tournament |
| 5-8 | Categories, folded drawings |
| 8+ | Drawing relay (in teams), folded drawings |
What you actually need
None of them need a box, a board or an app. That is the entire reason pencil games still work on a train or at a café table.
- 01One pen, one sheet: hangman, word chain, noughts and crosses
- 02One sheet each: categories, folded drawings, battleship
- 03Squared paper: hugely helpful for grid games, not required
- 04Two colours: for tracking who claimed which box in dots and boxes
What changes with children present
Games requiring writing exclude a six-year-old. What works at a mixed-age table:
Hangman and categories work from about eight upward; below that, reading speed breaks the round.
- 01Folded drawings — no writing
- 02Shared picture — no writing
- 03Dots and boxes — counting is enough
- 04Noughts and crosses — the rules take a minute
Why pencil games survive
Every game on a phone is faster and more colourful. Pencil games survive for a different reason: you play them looking at the other person.
A game on a phone puts two people in the same room but in separate places. A game on paper keeps the table shared — whose turn it is stays visible, and so do the reactions.
That is why these games come back on long journeys, in cafés and during power cuts.
When the round ends
Pencil rounds are short: three to fifteen minutes. After three rounds, tables stop wanting the same grid and the paper gets set aside.
Changing tempo usually means switching to questions. Our Lose-Lose deck runs forced-choice rounds — as quick as a pencil game, but it gets the table talking. Best Liar Wins covers bluffing, which follows naturally at a pen-and-paper table.
Frequently asked questions
What games can you play with a pen?
Three types: grid games (dots and boxes, battleship, SOS), word games (hangman, categories, anagrams) and drawing games (drawing relay, folded drawings). Which one to pick is decided by how many people are playing.
What can two people play with a pen?
Grid games: dots and boxes (3-5 minutes), battleship (10-15 minutes) and SOS. Hangman also works well with two. These break past two players, because waiting exceeds the length of a turn.
What works for a big group?
Past eight players, drawing games are the only option: team drawing relays and folded drawings. Folded drawings has no waiting at all, since everyone draws simultaneously on different sheets that rotate.
What can children play?
The ones needing no writing: folded drawings, shared picture, dots and boxes and noughts and crosses. Hangman and categories work from about eight upward, before which reading speed breaks the round.
Do you need squared paper?
No, but it speeds up grid games enormously. Drawing a 10x10 grid on blank paper can take half as long as a game of battleship. It makes no difference for word or drawing games.
