Scrabble Rules: Scoring, Tile Distribution and Valid Words

The rules of Scrabble: how many tiles you draw, how premium squares work, how blanks are used, which words count, and how the game ends.

Short answer

In Scrabble each player holds 7 tiles and scores by laying words on the board. The first word must cross the centre star, and every word after it has to connect to at least one tile already on the board. Points come from the tile values, with premium squares doubling or tripling either a letter or the whole word. A premium square only counts on the turn a tile is first placed on it. Using all seven tiles in one turn earns a 50-point bonus. Short answer: seven tiles each, premium squares pay once, and clearing your rack is worth 50.

How to play Scrabble: the basic rules

Scrabble is a word game for two to four players. Everyone draws seven tiles from the bag and, on their turn, lays a word on the board.

The first player has to cross the star square in the centre. Every word after that must touch at least one tile already on the board — a word floating on its own can't be played.

At the end of each turn you draw back up, replacing the tiles you used so your rack returns to seven.

  • 01Seven tiles per player.
  • 02The opening word crosses the centre square.
  • 03Every new word connects to existing tiles.
  • 04Refill to seven at the end of each turn.
  • 05Words run across or down, never diagonally.

How scoring works

Every tile carries a point value. A word scores the sum of its tiles, with premium squares applied on top.

Premium squares come in two kinds: letter premiums, which double or triple that one tile, and word premiums, which double or triple the whole word. Letter premiums are calculated first and word premiums applied last.

The most common mistake is trying to reuse a premium square. It only counts on the turn a tile is first placed on it; after that it behaves like an ordinary square.

  • 01Word score = sum of tile values.
  • 02Letter premiums first, word premiums last.
  • 03A premium square pays only on the turn it's first covered.
  • 04If one play covers two word premiums, both apply.
  • 05Using all seven tiles in a turn earns a 50-point bonus.

Tile distribution and blanks

Tile counts and values differ by language: an English set and a Turkish set are not distributed the same way. The underlying logic is shared — common letters are plentiful and cheap, rare letters are scarce and expensive.

Blank tiles stand in for any letter but score zero. Once a blank has been placed on the board, the letter it represents can't be changed.

  • 01Common letters: many tiles, low values.
  • 02Rare letters: few tiles, high values.
  • 03A blank represents any letter and scores nothing itself.
  • 04A blank on a premium square still triggers the word premium.
  • 05Once placed, a blank's letter is fixed for the rest of the game.

Which words are valid?

Validity is whatever the dictionary you agreed on says. In the dictionary means valid, absent means invalid — that's how arguments get cut short.

The excluded set is narrow: proper nouns, abbreviations, words needing an apostrophe, and compounds written as two words. Inflected forms depend on the language's own rules, which is exactly why the dictionary choice matters.

Agree the challenge procedure up front too. The common rule: the word is looked up, and if it isn't there the player loses their turn, while if it is there the challenger loses theirs.

  • 01Validity is decided by the dictionary chosen at the start.
  • 02Proper nouns, abbreviations and apostrophised forms are out.
  • 03Challenges are settled by looking the word up.
  • 04A failed challenge costs the challenger their turn.
  • 05A word becomes final once the next player has played.

Passing and exchanging tiles

A player with nothing to play may pass, or exchange tiles with the bag. Exchanging uses up the whole turn — you can't also play a word.

Exchanges aren't allowed once the bag is low. That's why the awkward tiles left in your rack decide so many endgames.

  • 01Passing scores nothing but keeps your rack.
  • 02No word can be played on a turn you exchange.
  • 03No exchanges once fewer than seven tiles remain in the bag.
  • 04Consecutive passes can end the game.
  • 05If nobody plays a word for two full rounds, play ends.

How the game ends and final scoring

The game ends when the bag is empty and one player uses the last tile in their rack.

Then the arithmetic: every remaining player subtracts the total value of the tiles still on their rack. The player who went out adds the sum of everybody else's leftovers to their own score.

That rule changes the endgame entirely — hanging on to a high-value tile costs you twice, once as a deduction and once as a gift to your opponent.

  • 01Play ends when someone empties their rack with the bag empty.
  • 02Each player deducts the value of their remaining tiles.
  • 03The player who went out adds those totals to their score.
  • 04If nobody goes out, the highest score wins.
  • 05Holding a high-value tile at the end is doubly expensive.

When the box isn't with you

What makes Scrabble work is that the turn keeps moving and everyone keeps thinking while they wait. That rhythm doesn't require a board: a question deck on a phone also passes round and needs no setup at all.

They aren't the same game — one produces words and scores, the other conversation. But after a long Scrabble session the table wants to change gear, and questions land well there. Best Liar Wins suits people who like bluffing; The Gossip Pot is built for rounds where a group talks about each other.

Frequently asked questions

How many tiles do you get in Scrabble?

Seven, refilled to seven at the end of every turn. Once the bag can't cover a full refill, the remaining tiles are distributed and the last turns are played from whatever is on the racks.

Can a premium square be used twice?

No. It only counts on the turn a tile is first placed on it; after that the tile scores its face value. This is why the triple-word squares get claimed early and why the opening moves matter so much.

When do you get the 50-point bonus?

When a player uses all seven tiles from their rack in a single turn. The bonus is added on top of the word score and any premiums, so combining it with a word premium can swing a game in one turn.

Which words don't count?

Proper nouns, abbreviations and anything needing an apostrophe. Everything else is decided by the dictionary agreed at the start. Skip that agreement and challenges will stop the game repeatedly.

How many people can play Scrabble?

Two to four. Two players is the more tactical game, because premium squares stay open much longer. With four, the waiting between turns gets long enough that a per-turn time limit is common.
